Day 3 (B, L) Luoyang / Departure
The excursion in this old city will bring you to Longmen Grottoes and White Horse Temple. After the tour, you will be escorted to the railway station for your train to the next destination.
Longmen Grottoes: 12km from the city, located on both banks of the Yi River, one of the three Buddhist grotto treasure houses in China, the grottoes got the name Longmen, which means "Dragon Gate", because the two mountains on the both banks of the Yi River appear as a gate. The carving work at Longmen began around AD 493 when Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei Dynasty moved his capital to Luoyang and the construction on caves had been carried on for over 400 years from then on. Now, there remain 2,345 caves and niches, over 2,840 inscribed tablets and more than 100,000 stone statues, which reflect vividly the development of Chinese Buddhism during the 5th and the 10th centuries and represent the high point of Chinese stone carving.
White Horse Temple: China's first Buddhist Temple built in AD 68 in Eastern Han Dynasty, named after the two white horses that carried the Buddhist scriptures back from old India, the temple was used to house the scriptures.
